Herndon WinterMarkt
Christmas fun at the 2022 Herndon German Winter Market.
This past Saturday, December 11, 2022, the family and I decided to venture out and visit the 2022 Herndon Winter Markt. This traditional German-style Christmas Market was first held in 2019, with the intent of bringing old world German and European Christmas traditions to the DC Metro Area. This event is free to enter and has something for the whole family to enjoy and help ring in this festive time of year. The stage area showcased demonstrations of traditional German dances and music, while vendors provided a delicious selection of holiday foods and drinks, as well as a variety of ideas for gifts, decorations, and artwork.
As we walked around the festival the smells of food abounded and my husband and I decided to share a bratwurst with sauerkraut and some warm German potato salad, while the kids decided on large pretzels. To help keep the cold at bay and compliment the food, we decided we needed something warm to drink. My husband located a tent that was selling traditional mulled German wine, known as Gluhwein, and we decided to give it a try. I have to say, it was incredibly delicious and helped warm me from the inside out.
As the kids sat eating some small, glazed donuts and drinking hot chocolate with my husband, I held on to my warm mug of Gluhwein and went to see what amazing goodies were for sale. I love to support small U.S. businesses and was thrilled when I came across Second Season Mittens, unique mittens that are created from recycled sweaters in State College, Pennsylvania, and I just had to purchase a pair. These mittens are so warm and durable that I know I will get a lot of use out of them.
On our way out, we decided to purchase some strudel to take with us, to pair with some ice cream later at home. As we walked back to the car, we all agreed that the Winter Markt had been a great way to spend the Saturday.
